Umm Sahl has been studying Arabic and the Islamic Sciences since 1983, much of which has been done in conjunction with her husband, Nuh Ha Mim Keller.
In 2002 she began studying with Sheikh Ali Hani, a local Jordanian scholar who specializes in the sciences of the Arabic language and commentary of the Quran (tafsir). The lessons available on this site are the summary of that study and are drawn from the works of Abu Sa’ud, Ibn ‘Ashur, Raghib Asfahani, Biqa’i, Razi, Alusi, Zamakhshari, Baydawi, Qunawi, Abu Hayyan, Tabari, Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir and others well known in tafsir literature, together with the works of major grammarians and lexicologists, past and present. The English translation is by courtesy of Nuh Ha Mim Keller.
Sheikh Ali’s knowledge represented to her a lifting of a veil from the Quran and the experience of its divine origin. She hopes that those listening will also share in that experience.
